Autism Diagnosis
Reliable autism diagnosis using widely recognised tools - ADOS and ADI-R
Service Description
An autism diagnosis is made after a comprehensive assessment by qualified and trained healthcare professionals. They assess against criteria set out in diagnostic manuals, such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5 (DSM-V) - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The DSM-V is used by the NHS to ensure clinicians are working to a consistent framework for understanding the presence or absence of autism. Our professionals are trained specialists with experience in working across the lifespan. Our autism assessments conform to NICE guidelines and use widely recognised diagnostic tools, such as the ADI-R and ADOS II. We make available diagnostic assessments for children and adults. We also provide tailored assessments, including school observations for children we work with, as appropriate. What is autism? Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by difficulties in social communication and interaction, and repetitive behaviours and restricted interests. This is a very cursory description for what is a very complex and varied condition that affects people in myriad ways. Some people with autism have very high levels of need in relation to functioning (sometimes diagnosed in early life with global developmental delay before a diagnosis of autism is given or have a concurrent diagnosis of learning disability), while other individuals will have more subtle and masked presentations that nevertheless have really challenging affects on their lives. As the saying goes, we are social creatures and for people with autism, this area of their lives can be hugely challenging. People with autism will have very different strengths and challenges, and the diagnosis reflects this diversity. Some clinicians refer to this heterogeneity in terms of a specific profile of strengths and needs. We like to think an assessment should always turn the spotlight on strengths. A diagnosis does provide access to services, resources, tailored support and other forms of help in education and employment. The diagnostic process involves gathering a developmental history, which can be completed online with someone who knows the person well, such as carer or parent. A diagnosis should not be made without spending direct time with the person. We do this in a home visit to administer the ADOS 2. The cost of an ASD assessment is £2100. We charge a small travel fee for the face-to-face appointment at 40p per mile. To make enquires navigate to the contact tab.
